Observation of Changes in Acoustic Emission and Vibration Signals to Transverse Crack on Rotating Shaft: An Experiment Investigation
This research focuses on the observation of changes in acoustic emission signal and vibration to transverse crack on rotating shaft. A test model consists of a single electric motor unit as the driving, simple clutch, test shaft, rolling bearings, and radial load as substitute torsion and bending force. The purpose of this study was to observe changes in acoustic emission and vibration signal by using acoustic emission sensor and vibration. The fundamental difference to other studies is the use of microphone as acoustic emission sensor is placed no direct contact with part being studied. The result of measurements of acoustic emission signal compared with the vibration signal indicates that the acoustic emission signal more cleanly seen and displays the number of maximum spectral peak fewer and amplitude values more consistent when compared with the vibration signal. Increasing the speed of shaft and depth crack increases the amplitude of change is increasing. This facilitates the process of detection of cracks on rotating shaft. It can be concluded that the microphone as acoustic emission sensor of this study can be used as an alternative sensor to detect crack, especially on parts of rotating machine.
